The Calusa Indians first discovered the healing powers of the waters known as Surveyor’s Creek in Southwest Florida. They made their home along its riverbank and when they departed, only their unique painted pottery and huge shell mounds were left in silent testimony. Ponce De Leon and the Spanish exploration tasted the treasures of the Gulf Coast and by the 18th century the country had fought a civil war and expanded westward. Braxton B. Coomer transformed this largely uninhabited area into a community originally known as Survey. By 1910, visitors were flocking to the white sandy beaches and year-round sunshine although there were still no roads to Survey. J. Henry Ragsdale changed all that in 1912 when he bought 2,400 acres of land around Survey and changed the name to Bonita Springs. His purchase led to the addition of railroads and a highway system called the Tamiami Trail. When completed, the Tamiami Trail connected Tampa Bay to Miami and Southwest Florida to the rest of the country.
